Sitting on the toilet for long periods of time due to smartphone use can increase the risk of hemorrhoids.

In the study conducted at the Boston-based Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in the USA, 125 adults who had a routine colonoscopy between August 1 and December 15, 2024, were asked about their age, gender, body mass index, physical activity level and nutritional habits, and the frequency and duration of smartphone use in the toilet.

Researchers who analyzed survey data with colonoscopy results found that 66 percent of participants used smartphones in the restroom.

Experts have determined that the probability of developing hemorrhoids is more than 46 percent in those who use smartphones in the toilet.

Researchers say that the most common activities done on the phone during this time are "reading news and browsing social media."

Experts recommend that the time spent using the phone in the toilet should not exceed five minutes.

Hemorrhoids are the third most common gastrointestinal disease, accounting for 4 million outpatient and emergency room visits annually.

The disease, which costs the healthcare system more than $800 million, is caused by factors such as constipation, a low-fiber diet, prolonged sitting, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle and pregnancy.

The research was published in the journal 'Plos One'.
