With the summer coming and the school holidays, most people were overwhelmed by the heat and threw themselves into the sea or the pool. Sunscreens, which we use to protect ourselves from the harmful rays of the sun, are on the agenda again lately. Can last year's sunscreen still be used?
We like hot weather in summer. Many people threw themselves into the sea or pool with the onset of the summer season. We all spend a lot of time basking in the sun while we're here, and if you're smart you use sunscreen before going out in the sun. Some take out last year's bottle, while others go to the shops to buy a new one. We wondered: Should you throw away last year's sunscreen or can you still use it?
What do you usually do? Are you buying a new sunscreen or using an old bottle?
Suntan cream
When you buy a bottle of sunscreen, the label usually says that once opened, the product will last for about 12 months. Sunscreen manufacturers claim that after a year the SPF will be halved. According to them, this happens because the product is in constant contact with UV radiation, oxygen and heat throughout the summer. That's why they say the lotion becomes less effective over time.
What do dermatologists say?
But Ann Lievens thought this was probably a bit of an exaggeration. She explained to HLN that she thought it was such a waste that many opened bottles of sunscreen were lost in the trash a year later. Lievens wanted to know the truth about it, so she tested whether the SPF of her one-year-old sunscreen bottle
Could be reduced.
They tested five high-quality SPF 50+ sunscreens for kids: Eucerin Kids Sun, Nivea Sun Kids, Garnier Ambre Solaire Kids, Solait Kids, and Aptonia Kids. "A year later, we retested them after mimicking the exact conditions of the first test." Year-round lotions were exposed to both high and low temperatures and opened frequently over a two-week period. "Testing showed that all products still had an SPF of 50+ and retained UVA protection," explains Lievens. "This means that our testing has shown that sunscreens can be used for more than a year." said.
Control
So you don't have to throw away your sunscreen bottle right away, but it's important to keep a few things in mind. For example, you need to store the bottle in question in a certain way: “After use, do not leave the bottle open and leave it in the shade,” advises Lievens. It also encourages people to store the product in a cool, dry place away from the sun throughout the year. Also, there are a few things you should check before using the product. If it smells weird or its texture has completely changed, you should still throw it away. “But if it looks good, you can definitely still use it.”
