Teach Children to Use Digital Technologies Correctly

Children, they are our future custodians, as it is sometimes said, we entrusted the future from them. Yes, we have been entrusted because they will shape and create the future. So much so that our age is going to the age of digital technology with incredible speed. There is no need to go back too far, when computers first entered our lives, none of the things we do with computers today would have even crossed our minds. But now there is no place where there is no digital environment.

So how compatible are we with this digital technology? How adaptable are our children and how can they use this to their advantage?

There's also the other side of the coin. How safe is this world, which makes our lives easier in every way and enables us to do more with less effort and energy? Yes right, how secure is our future for our children and youth?

Our children can safely use digital technology with the help of us parents. We will suggest five actionable steps in teaching our children how to use a safer digital technology.

1-Make your child benefit from digital technologies with the rule and the right approach, not with prohibitions;
If you ban mobile phones, tablets and computer games to your child, what will you role models do in front of them? If you do not follow the same rules, in other words, if what you say and what you do do not match, you will not have any trust in your child. E.g; If your phone does not fall out of your hands while limiting the use of tablets to your child, this will create a contradiction in your child's mind. Just as you limit it, you must also keep yourself in check.

2-Make use of digital technology in the field of cultural development;
Due to the pandemic that shook the whole world, the limited life of all children and young people inevitably led them to mobile phone, tablet and computer games. Education and training carried out in the digital environment showed us that the new age has education and training methods other than face-to-face education. So, what could these children do in the time left from the lessons? With the use of technology these days, when all social activities are canceled and going out is a complete risk, we have been able to do many activities that we could not do in normal times. For example, while we could not find time to go and see some museums before, now we can visit any museum we want, even before going to sleep at midnight.

3-Connect your child's use of digital devices to the time and condition;
Set reasonable restrictions on the time your children spend on cell phones and computers. Be sure to stick to the time you decide together by talking with your child (this should be a period in which you are more decisive but mutually agreed). While the child is on a tablet, computer and mobile phone, keep track of the time, and do not forget about it by diving into other things.

It should never be forgotten that being immobile for a long time will lead to various ergonomic problems and serious damage to the musculoskeletal system over time. On the other hand, computer games with sudden visual changes cause some serious neurological health problems (eye disorders, epileptic health problems) in children.

4-Search for programs suitable for your child's development;
Choose programs that are suitable for your child's mental and spiritual development. You can also get help from your school or experts in this regard. One of the beauties of distance education is that you can find different options in every subject you want. For example, audiobook applications can be a good solution for children who do not like to read books. Reading visual or auditory books will be very beneficial for your children's imagination and spiritual development.

5-Do not act insecurely towards your child ;
Do not act in ways that make your child think you do not trust them. Make him trust himself and you. Explain to him that digital media is a very dangerous environment as well as beneficial for him. Explain to him that the digital world also has unreal aspects. Always state that under no circumstances should he share any information about himself or his family. Do such checks frequently on your mobile phone and computer. A good start is to adjust the security settings of your Internet service provider to suit your child.

It is entirely in the hands of us parents that our future children can become a generation that keeps up with the arts, culture and technology. We wish our children to be self-confident, self-confident and conscious of where and how technology should be used.
