Everything in life is built for right-handed people in general. We see that left-handed people have difficulty adapting to this situation from time to time. In addition, many scientific studies have been conducted on left-handed people. Here are 10 surprising facts about Lefties!
1- THEY CONSTITUTE 12 PERCENT OF THE WORLD'S POPULATION
On average, 12% of the world is left-handed, 87% right-handed, and 1% versatile. However, as being left-handed becomes more socially accepted, the percentage of left-handers worldwide is slowly increasing.
2- THE POSSIBILITY TO BE ALLERGY IS HIGHER
Studies have shown that left-handed people are 11 times more likely to suffer from allergies than right-handed people.
The research also found that left-handers are two and a half times more likely to suffer from auto-immune disorders, such as ulcerative colitis or rheumatoid arthritis.
3- They are more prone to migraine
In the same scientific study described above, it was also discovered that left-handers are roughly twice as likely to experience migraines compared to right-handers.
4-SLEEP DISORDERS ARE MORE VISIBLE
It turned out that left-handed people are much more likely to suffer from sleep disorders than right-handed people. Periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) is a condition in which your limbs move involuntarily during sleep. In a 2011 study called 'Evaluation of Periodic Limb Movements in Right-handed and Left-handed Patients', it was found that 69% of right-handed participants had bilateral limb movements, while 94% of left-handed patients had a very large proportion. !
5- THEY ARE MORE POSSIBLE TO BE AN ALCOHOLIC
A 1973 article by psychologist Paul Minister 'Left-handedness and alcoholism' noted that a higher-than-expected number of patients in an alcoholism ward were left-handed. However, in 2011, Dr. A study called 'Hand use and drinking behavior' by Kevin Denny that looked at 25,000 people from 12 different countries found that being left-handed did not result in excessive drinking later in life. What he suggested was that left-handed people are more likely to drink moderately than right-handed people.
6- DO LEFT-HOLDERS BE MORE INTELLIGENT?
A 2007 study 'The Effect of Hand Use on Students' Intelligence Level' showed that left-handed people are more likely to have a higher IQ, while another 2010 study 'The relationship between hand preference, hand performance, and general cognitive ability' suggests the opposite.
SO WHICH?
To end the discussion, two researchers from the University of Athens in Greece compiled data from several individual studies to collect data from a much larger sample size. The results of this research showed that right-handers were smarter on average, but only marginally. Assuming the average left-handed person has an IQ of 100, the average right-handed person would be 101.5.
So the current belief is that the difference in intelligence between leftists and rightists is so small that it can be neglected!
7- MORE POSSIBILITIES TO HAVE A LANGUAGE PROBLEM
A 2009 study in Finland titled 'Mixed Handedness Is Linked to Mental Health Problems in Children and Adolescents', which looked at language-related problems in children, showed that mixed-handed children are more likely to have language and scholastic problems that persist into adulthood.
Similarly, a 1993 study in Norway called "Dyslexia, Handedness and Immune Disorders" that looked at 734 children found a significant association between dyslexia and left-handedness.
8- THE POSSIBILITY TO BE MALE IS HIGHER
According to the 2008 'Gender differences in left-handedness: meta-analysis of 144 studies', men are 23% more left-handed. This study compiled data from 144 individual studies that included a sample size of approximately 2 million participants, so it is generally considered statistically relevant.
