Coffee drinkers take more steps but sleep less

Drinking at least one cup of coffee a day can lead to more movement and less sleep.

According to the news in CNN, the findings of the latest research conducted in the USA shed light on both the positive and negative aspects of coffee consumption.

To get a better idea of the immediate health effects of coffee, the researchers observed 100 healthy adults, with an average age of 39, from the San Francisco area of California.

Participants were fitted with devices that track their steps and sleep, and electrocardiogram devices that monitor blood sugar and heart rhythms. Each participant was randomly told to drink as much coffee as they wanted for two days, then not for two days, and repeat this cycle for two weeks.

It was observed that the participants took an average of 1058 steps more on the days that they drank coffee, compared to the days that they did not drink. But on the same days, the participants slept at least 36 minutes less.

The research revealed that more coffee brings more movement and reduces sleep time. In addition to these, the consumption of coffee has been the subject of research that can expose the person to high risks such as heart palpitations.

Despite all this, it is also emphasized that coffee drinking may have a potential genetic factor in causing less sleep. The research was published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
